Heaven Is Here

ht heaven is here cover wy 120328 vblog Heaven Is Here: Utah Mom Disfigured in Plane Crash Releases Book

About a year ago, my sister Sarah and I were talking about the blogs that we liked to keep up on. One of her favorites was NieNie Dialogues. Stephanie Nielson originally started her blog as a way to stay in touch with her Utah family when she was living back East. In August of 2008 she and her husband were in a private plane that crashed and they were both burned. Stephanie was burned over 80% of her body and was in a medicaly induced coma for many weeks and then in the hospital until the end of December of that year.

I went back to her blog posts in August 2008 and read forward - for days. you would find me in my office at 6pm after everyone had gone home reading her blog and crying as she shared her struggles and feelings and her recovery. I ached reading about her constant pain and the difficulty she had in getting back to being a mother to her four little ones. She talked about getting used to her new face and having to deal with feelings of being ugly and how to find beauty within. She shared her dad's admonition to her that "everything is under control" if we will turn our lives to the Lord. Mostly, she shared her faith, her testimony, her hope.

I feel like I know her. In fact, one evening I passed her in the lobby at Hale Centre Theatre and told my mom and other sister "that NieNie!!!". Once in the theater we saw them sitting across from us, Stephanie, Mr. Nielson and their daughers Claire and Jane. I told my companions each of their names and about their two younger boys that much surely be at home. I told them about the accident and how the recovery had been going. I told them that I wanted to badly to go over and say hello but I didn't want to interrupt their family time. At one point, I saw Stephanie take a photo of the girls and I said to my mom "that's going to be a blog pose!" Sure enough, a few days later I read about the play on NieNie Dialogues.

Sephanie recently wrote and had published a book about her experience and after Sarah  finished it, she lent it to me. I had planned on buying it (and still probably will) but hadn't yet. I sat on the couch with it Wednesday night at 11pm. "I'll just read a little bit" I told myself. Time got away from me and I noticed it was 1am. But we were in the hardest part of her recovery. "I'll just finish this section. When she goes home from the hospital then I'll quit." Of course, that didn't happen.

Finally at 3am I closed the cover of the book, I gathered up the half a box of tissues that lay crumpled around me on the couch and headed to bed. My eyes were puffy from crying and I was exhausted but I spent a good 30 minutes praying and thanking Heavenly Father for the blessings in my life. For my sweet husband and my beautiful little Maddy. For my wonderful parents, my four sisters and their husbands. For my husbands Parents and his siblings. For my membership in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. For my faith in the Savior. I thanked him for Stephanie's story and for the countless lives she has touched around the world by her ability to share her testimony in such a real, honest and unashamed way. Her story of hope and faith and love of motherhood and family touched me a great deal and I am grateful.

We all have trials. For some people they are emotional burdens, for some it is overcoming tempations. For some it is problems with our physical bodies - we are all different. I know that we are given the trials that are best suited to refining us, to preparing us to our returning to our Father in Heaven, and to humbling us and bringing us to Christ. I am grateful for the trials that I have - partially because I would not want the trials that others have. I'm grateful that our Father loves us enough to test us and polish us and to help us to "come to ourselves" as Elder Robert D. Hales reminded in General Conference earlier this month.

a few new posts

There are a few new posts down below - I started them before my "put down the phone" post and so they show up prior to it. So, in case your tracking shows the latest post only, I wanted to direct your attention to two posts full of good pictures below.

on posting more

Oh my. I have got to write a new post, or two, or three. Because everytime I scroll down to look through my list of bloggy friends, I see that halloween picture of the "sister wives" and it creeps me out a little bit every time I see myself. Got to do a post that has a lot of pictures so I can push that Halloween post a bit farther down - or maybe to a previous page!

formating

Dumb formatting!!! I spent way too much time trying to get the formatting right on the next post. Apparently this is the best I'm going to get.

GRRRRRRRR

I am extrememly annoyed, I cannot for the life of me figure out why the post below will not add paragraph breaks!!! I'm at my wit's end so you get colors that signify paragraphs. It's a long post and all black it was just too overwhelming.

busy

Just a lame-o post to say, sorry I'm not posting. There have been so many family things going on and I haven't had any downtime at work (my normal blog update time) so my blog suffers.

I hope to be able to blog at some point in detail about my wonderful Grandma'dele's funeral, my great visit with Rachel who came for the funeral, my fun Saturday in Payson to celebrate Scott's dad's 70th birthday . . . and everything else that has been going on since my last post.

We shall see.

Multiple posts

I should have post dated some of these so you'd have three days of reading pleasure. Sorry. If you want, you can read the first today, then come back tomorrow and the day after for the others.

Fixes

Ok, Ok, I get it - my picture was all messed up. It's fixed now.

Today was a very nice, relaxing Sunday. We sat around and watched 8 episodes of "Firefly", a TV show borrowed from mom. I like it! The theme song is a bit goofy but I am enjoying the show. I just took a break to get my blog up to date and I'm off for one more episode before bed.

Night, night.

Sixth folder, sixth picture

This is my sixth folder, sixth picture. One the one hand, I was hoping for a picture that was older and would evoke memories while I shared it. On the other hand, this is indicative of my life right now and there is no better picture than this one! It's my mom's favorite!! What a sweet girl, only 2 or 3 hours old. Boy she has changed in the last three months.
I tag Sarah and Mary - Katie too if she'll do it . . . As you browse to attach a photo, pick the sixth folder and the sixth picture!

Confusion

Ah, I understand your comments now. I started writing the Arbor Day post last week (the 12th) as a draft, but added the pictures and published the post yesterday. Looks like it kept the date that I started the post. I suppose when I do that again I need to doublecheck the date and make sure it is current!

All I have to say

I know, I know, I am way behind in my blogging. I'd love to use the fact that my due date is 16 days away as an excuse but then, my cousin Sharon was blogging faithfully right up until her delivery so that makes me look lazy - well, I suppose not blogging at all already has made me look lazy.

Sorry to those who are tired of hearing baby news but it's all that I can think about these days. The baby room is more organized and I feel much less crazy. We have a crib and a dresser and some clothes and some diapers. So, we can welcome Madelyn home when she's ready (and can that be sooner than later?).

I'm finding it hard to find clothing that is comfortable. My pants all feel too tight, my shirts are all too short. Makes it difficult to get dressed in the morning. At home you'll find me in sweat pants and Scott's T-shirts.

I haven't packed my hospital bag but I've been 1cm dilated for two consecutive weeks so I figure unless something miraculous happens, I have time to get that together this weekend or next week.

I'm terribly excited to meet this little girl! Work is a pain but at least it fills my time - and that's all I have to say about that

Recinding

OK, I recind Linda's Kreative blogger award. See her comment below. I just want her to know that I did put thought into who I should award this too. I gave it to her and Sammy for a reason and for her to just toss my gift away with the used paper and ribbons . . . fine, never mind!!

Kreativ Blogger

Ah, I've been given an award! My sister passed it along so now I get to share 6 things about me. Hm, this could be difficult. At least they don't have to be things you don't know or embarrasing moments - she just said 6 things.

1-I love spaghetti. I know you probably all know that but probably don't know the extent. I can make it for dinner on Sunday, gorge myself so that I can hardly bare to lay down because of the weight of my stomach (and this is pre-baby belly), and still eat it every night thereafter as a leftover. Though I love my mom's spaghetti recipe best, I will eat it from just about any place, including in the form of Spaghetti O's from Chef Boyardee! If spaghetti can't be found, then some other pasta with meat sauce will do but it is less fulfilling.

2-I learned to really clean a kitchen at BYU. When I get going on my kitchen (I have to admit it is not nearly often enough) out come the Q-Tips, toothbrushes, and toothpicks and I go crazy. I don't get out the dentist's mirror like the RA's used to to check the underside of the dishwasher door but I do get a toothpick and run it around the edges of the faucet and the edges of the metal ring that goes around the sink. I learned from my mom the trick to cleaning out a microwave is to put a damp dishrag in the micro and to heat it for a few seconds - the moisture loosens up all the cooked on stuff and then you can more easily wipe it off.

3-I really want to be a lot of things but I don't spend the time to develop the talent. I would love to have the "runner's high" but I hate running! I really want to have a beautiful garden and enjoy it but I can't get past the fact that I am terrible at actually watering my plants. I think that I will pass on the "runner's high" but next year I would like to become a better gardener. Scott is helping with that by strategically placing sprinklers so that I, hopefully, can at least keep the plants alive!

4-I really want to go and visit the Kennecott copper mine. We went there when we were little with my parents and I remember thinking how cool that great big hole was. The little trucks driving up the sides of the hole looked so small! We have a pictures somewhere of us gathered around/on a big truck tire - we were dwarfed. Well, I want to go again. I still think it will be cool and that it won't end up being one of those experiences where my memory is grander than the real thing.

5-I have a baby in me! I know, that's not news to any of you, but it is still weird, fascinating, exciting and foreign to me. Lately I have been feeling this baby moving around a lot and it makes me smile every time. The idea that there is a little human inside me is just such a miracle - the fact that Heavenly Father made us so that this could happen is just incredible and the fact that it does happen is a miracle. I am so grateful that our little family is going to get bigger even though it will be hard.

6-I don't want to work today. This also isn't really news but as you can tell, since I'm blogging at 2:18 in the afternoon, I'm not very motivated on this Monday afternoon. I really just want to go to Hobby Lobby to find something to decorate my house with and I want my ultrasound on Wednesday to come faster and I want to put on a mumu so that I can have my tummy free from all waistbands. And I want m&ms.

Now I'm supposed to bestow this award upon others - so, I award it to Sammy and Linda because they are so good at keeping up to date on their blogs. I think I maybe am supposed to do 6 but Sarah didn't and so I'm just going to follow suite.

Cute, Cute ideas

I found this site while blog hopping from Katie's site. What a fun blog. Linda - you are going to go crazy with these cute ideas. Makes me wish that I had a finished living room and front porch - I want to go to Hobby Lobby now. Maybe I'll leave work early. Is it really only 1:24?

Various

I'm in trouble with Linda because I haven't blogged in 9 days. Sorry, I know, I'm breaking my own request of once a week! I have a few posts in mind but I have to get the pictures off my BlackBerry and today I packed up my desk to move to the new building - included in some box somewhere is the cord that connects the BB to the computer. So, you have to wait.

I can report that I was in a golf tournament yesterday at work and played quite well for my standards. We didn't win but I was still pleased with my progress!

What else, I'm feeling really pregnant. I have started showing so random people at work keep looking at me and saying "oh, you're pregnant". At least I look pregnant so people are comfortable assuming that I am - most times you wouldn't make a comment until you are sure, so that must mean I'm looking prego and not just fatter. I feel quite good - the nausea has left and now I just am left to deal with the pain in my lower back/hips/legs from the baby pressing on my spinal cord. Most days it's not too bad but some days, usually after being on my feet a lot, I feel like I'm 80 years old and can barely walk.

We have an ultrasound on the 22nd and I would like to find out whether we are having a boy to be a friend to new cousins Jackson and Kaden, or whether we are having a girl like grandpa wants. We'll see!!! I'm counting the days.

Well, that's all. This seems more like an email than a traditional blog but it will have to do for now. Adios.

post-op Post

So, I have been a bit chastised in my daily checking post. I do admit that I haven't been totally great in my postings either - I have had my bad moments. Mostly I was just commenting on how much I wish all of my blogging buddies would post often so that I could keep up with their lives. Maybe I just need to limit my checking to every third day or something. Does the fact that I check every day (sometimes twice) provide a commentary on my life somehow?

Some of the blogs I daily check only have a new post once a month or so. I'm just desparate for news!!! As I have mentioned before (and I know I don't follow this advice myself) I was told when I started the blog that it was quite acceptable to write only once a week. That's my goal I suppose. And I will try to remember that once a month is still better than them having no blog at all and then not getting news any more frequent that a Christmas card!

I do totally have to check out this blog post feed thing . . . of course, then I don't have the joy of going to a site that has had the same post up for awhile and feeling the great joy and excitement of a new post when I didn't expect one. That's kind of fun!

Daily Checking

I've got to stop checking blogs every day because I get so disappointed when I see the same post on my friends' sites as I did the day before. I have to give props to Sharon who is by far the best at being up to date and then my sisters and Linda all come in next. April - you get a pass because you are raising newborn twins - though I sure do love new posts from you. And the rest of you (you know who you are), when I can recite the name of your last blog post from memory because I've seen it so many times it's been too long. . . give me an update would you?!?
